NHS Foundation Trust
Capital Programme, Citycare Ltd

Challenge:

Driven by the need to address a strategic change in Trust priorities, NHS Humber Foundation Trust and its estates partner Citycare sought a partner to project manage the delivery of their estate capital programme.

Previously, the projects within the capital programme had not been delivered within planned timescales and the Trust found the quality of the final schemes were unsatisfactory.

Development:

After detailed discussions between the client and Citycare, Sewell Construction was appointed.

It was important to appoint a contractor with experience and one which was appropriate to work within sensitive environments.

Delivery:

Several projects have been completed as part of the Trust’s Capital Programme, including:

Newbridges

The acute inpatient unit provides a safe, therapeutic environment for men suffering from any form of mental illness who need to be in hospital. The aim is to ensure they can return to their usual environment as soon as possible and receive a full package of care when they are discharged.

The Sewell Construction team created a larger dining hall, refurbishing an assisted living kitchen and clinic, forming a new bedroom and en suite, and replacing the ironmongery and security hardware throughout the building.

Humber Centre

A ward refurbishment and upgrading of health facilities across various schemes. This includes a full refurbishment of two seclusion suites. Work was carried out one room at a time in a live environment to ensure the centre could remain operational.

Work was completed on time and within budget, with a number of specialist items put in place, recognising the environment and patients using it.

The purpose of the work was to bring the rooms up to current mental health specification.

Clinical cooling works

This work was done following a pharmacy report across 10 units where drugs are kept on site.

There was a requirement to ensure the rooms were maintained at a set temperature to keep the drugs active.

It was particularly challenging with it being across various sites and coordination was key to the success of the scheme. Air conditioning was installed alongside clinical cooling systems.

Millview Court patient kitchen and en suites

The patient kitchen was improved and upgraded, alongside existing en suites to meet current standards.

It was fully stripped out and there are now lock off, as well as emergency shut down, facilities.

The work was carried out in a live environment with minimum disruption to the operation of the unit.

Westlands shower room, bathroom, toilet and en suite

Eight rooms were refurbished in the female inpatient unit, which was a live environment.

The scheme grew from refurbishment of the shower room and bathroom to the eight room programme of work.

The work was undertaken safely by fully screening it off and it was finished on time, with the additional work completed ahead of schedule.
