Sewell Construction is carrying out a significant refurbishment of Hull New Theatre and building a new front of house area. The refurbished space and larger, modern back stage area will accommodate larger touring theatre companies, putting Hull New Theatre back on the map as a go to venue. The New Theatre improvements are possible as a result of the Hull UK City of Culture status and funding provided in the Chancellor’s Budget Announcement in March 2016.
As major partners of Hull UK City of Culture 2017, we’re proud to be involved in this flagship scheme that will ultimately help to revive the theatre culture in Hull and entice tourists from all over the globe
To date, we have demolished all buildings that wrapped around the theatre and demolished the fly tower. The new fly tower is now in place and branding has been placed. The orchestra pit is now formed and work is continuing to form the new basement changing rooms. At the front of the theatre, the new front of house extension area has been formed. The extension will incorporate a new, modern cafe and additional bar to improve the visitor experience. The existing front of house area is also being remodelled.
The work is taking place alongside the development of the Ron Dearing University Technical College (UTC), which together are transforming the historic Kingston Square in Hull City Centre. Find out more here.
