Construction starts at St Barnabas School

Construction work is well underway at St. Barnabas CE Primary School, York. The school is being extended to increase its pupil capacity from 120 to 180 places following City of York Council’s Cabinet approval earlier this year.

Sewell Construction is currently on site carrying out the work. The firm is creating two new classrooms with joint resource space and extending the existing kitchen facilities.

Head Teacher, Karen Boardman said:

“We’re really happy that the extension is getting underway. It’s greatly needed, our admissions have increased year on year.

“As you would expect the children are really keen to see what’s happening on site. We’re working with Sewell to ensure the building project is utilised as a learning experience for the pupils. We’re running a safety poster competition and the winning designs will be used on the site. We’re also planning a laying the first brick ceremony along with classroom based building activities.”

Project Manager, Mark Boothby from Sewell Group, said:

“We’ve had a busy first few weeks on site, digging out the piles and preparing the steel reinforcement for the new buildings. Over the next month we’ll start building the frame of the walls, so the pupils will be able to see the extension really taking shape.”

The extension is due to complete for the start of the new school year in September 2015.
