Sewell Construction celebrates sustainability award win

Sewell Construction is celebrating after winning a prestigious award for its work to make construction more sustainable.

We were chosen as the winner of the sustainability category at the Constructing Excellence in Yorkshire and Humber Awards.

The judges were impressed by our commitment to net zero goals, the innovative approaches we have taken to decarbonising our work and our dedication to ensuring we deliver social value on every project.

This includes using electric diggers and plant equipment, solar powered cabins on site, maximizing digital technology and replacing diesel with vegetable oil-based fuels. We also divert 97% of waste from landfill, and have created a community project where over 100 school children created their own bug hotels to enhance biodiversity in their back gardens.

The Sewell Construction team also have a sustainability tracker, which monitors the benefits to the community from each project. This includes opportunities for young people to be involved, either in apprenticeships and graduate schemes, or through school engagement, volunteering by staff, support for charities and training.

Sewell Construction maximised opportunities for sustainable building as part of our recent work on Bodington Playing Fields, a major sports facility we constructed for the University of Leeds. The buildings were constructed with energy efficiency in mind, and despite tough targets being set for CO₂ emissions, stringent quality control meant that the buildings outperformed their original goals, receiving the top A rating for energy performance.

The win in the Yorkshire and Humber awards means that the company will now go through to the national final of the Construction Excellence Awards, which will be held in November.

Sewell Construction are headquartered in Hull, and deliver a range of construction projects across the Yorkshire and Humber region. Part of the larger Sewell Group, the company works on design, build, refurbishment and retrofit schemes, and recent projects have included the design and building of the new Broadacre Primary School in Hull, the construction of West Hull Health Hub, revitalizing heritage buildings at the Tileyard North complex in Wakefield and the refurbishment of The Edge fitness centre at the University of Leeds.

The company also recently became part employee-owned, with all staff now becoming Co-Owners in the business, giving them a greater say in how the business is run.
