Howdens Joinery is the UK’s largest manufacturer and supplier of fitted kitchens, appliances and joinery products. The company has 650 depots and two manufacturing sites, based at Howden, East Yorkshire and Runcorn, Cheshire. Sewell has supported Howdens to maintain, develop and reconfigure its East Yorkshire site for over 20 years.
Our portfolio on the site ranges from civils and infrastructure work, creating new and remodelling existing offices, carrying out drainage and road works and ongoing maintenance.
Howdens’ Eco Centre, which sees waste burnt on site to generate Howdens’ own energy, was also built by Sewell and is helping to create a more efficient and greener approach for the future of the company.
The factory remodelling and infrastructure work for the west side development of the Howden site involved turning three factories into one, removing the asbestos roof, cladding the building and installing six compounds and generators. Repair work included decorating internally, replacing slabs and installing new plinths for the machinery to run on.
Our most recent project, which is the largest we have undertaken together to date, involved factory remodelling and infrastructure work across the 63 acre site.
We have also completed two projects at the company’s Runcorn site in Cheshire, including a silo base installation and refurbishing the existing boiler house in 2014.
Collaborative working is key to our long-term partnership, and labour including architects and engineers, have been primarily local. Local labour and local spend equates to 95%, and over 20 apprentices have worked on site over the years.
Flexibility is hugely important on a site like Howdens and we have always been mindful of the scale of the work undertaken, ensuring nothing interrupts manufacturing. We have worked weekends, nights, holidays and Christmas to ensure flexibility around the nature of the business.
We have a consistent team on site, so familiar faces are visible, communication is strong and the lessons learned from each project are adopted to drive continual improvement in our partnership.
