Challenge

Benson Park is a Cranswick Foods owned food factory based on Sutton Fields in East Hull.

As a long standing partner, Sewell developed the poultry production manufacturer’s first specialist factory in 2003 and following a successful extension a few years later, were approached for a third time to deliver a complex expansion of the site in 2015.

Working closely with the client team throughout each phase we used open book negotiations which led to a clear and honest relationship with the client.

Delivery

The first phase, with a budget of £1.3m, required a full food production line, including a frozen and raw food preparation area, cooking and flavouring, packaging and shipping facilities. Placing, installing and commissioning of specialist equipment was needed.

While phase two, which was an extension to the low risk manufacturing area, was budgeted at £600,000 and completed to a tight deadline.

The multimillion pound third phase saw a large scale extension built to create additional space, doubling the cooking and cooling capacity, increasing the high care packing facility and commissioning of a chargrilling line, as well as the upgrade of utilities and extra car parking.

The second and third phases meant the site team would be working in and around a live facility, where the client needed minimal disruption, so the delivery programme was phased to incorporate this. Employing the same design team all the way through the build on each phase enabled a smooth process due to the familiarity, fluency and continuity for the client.

Results

All three phases were completed on time, on budget and with zero accidents. With all project managers from the area and a predominantly locally-based supply chain, this meant the local pound was re-circulated, as well as keeping the carbon footprint to a minimum.

A safe, secure and legally compliant environment was delivered, with business continuity throughout.
