The problem
Grimsby Institute is one of the largest colleges in the country, with over 15,000 students studying over 80,000 qualifications.
Funded by a Department for Education grant, the college wanted to bring the areas the students used outside of lessons up to the same standard as their high quality teaching spaces.

The solution
Sewell Construction were tasked with creating vibrant and engaging social spaces for Grimsby Institute’s students to enjoy. Consisting of a cafeteria, breakout area, reception and quiet areas, the refurbishment establishes a wide and distinctive palette, featuring colourful furniture, paint and even glass panes decorated with laser printed film of birch trees to provide a sense of privacy and calm.
A great first impression
A rainbow patterned floor livens up one entrance way, with guests being greeted by a large multimedia wall showing the latest news, giving visitors and students a striking welcome.
As well as decoration, impressive new ceilings, lighting and feature flooring, the area also has bespoke furniture to give it the wow factor.
The challenges
To avoid disruption for students and staff, work took place over the summer holidays, with the entire area stripped out, refurbished, decorated, and cleaned. Practical completion of the main area was achieved in only eight weeks, to allow students to return and make use of the new facility. We then returned in October half term to replace the temporary ceiling, which had been installed until we received the specialist feature ceiling.
To achieve this ambitious timescale, we had a large team working on the project for eight weeks, alongside trusted suppliers, to ensure students were greeted with the upgraded facilities when they returned for the new year in September.
The high end finish of the project also meant the college had high expectations, but our team thrive on a challenge, ensuring all work was completed to the very highest standard to suit the bespoke fittings and furnishings.
The result
When students returned in September, they had dedicated areas for socializing which really had the wow factor. It’s a huge leap forward for the college, and is another step towards their ambitious goal of enriching lives through excellent education, community collaboration and employment opportunities.
