Changing the face of construction in the digital age with young people

Thousands of students had the opportunity to find out more about future careers and job opportunities, including construction in the digital age, at a recent exhibition held at Hull’s Bonus Arena.

Skills Humber brought almost 4,000 students aged 14 to 19 from across the region face-to-face with employers, training providers, colleges, universities and professional bodies, with the aim of raising aspirations, motivating and inspiring the next generation through hands-on activities and demonstrations.

The Sewell Construction team spoke to young people about their goals for the future and what roles are available in construction in the current digital age.

This included jobs on-site, in design and within marketing and communications, along with details of potential salaries, giving them an insight into the industry.

The team was also awarded the accolade for Best Employer Engagement Stand at the event.

Katie Robertson, Design Coordinator at Sewell Construction, was part of the team who engaged with students at Skills Humber.

She said: “At Sewell Group, we have created a ‘home for talent’ and Skills Humber was a great opportunity to meet young people who could help to shape the construction industry in the future, while also hearing more about the aims and aspirations of 14 to 19-year-olds across the region.

“The students also had the chance to have a virtual tour of the Ron Dearing University Technical College, which was built by Sewell Construction using Building Information Modelling (BIM) Level 2 at the forefront of digital construction.

“As a BIM Level 2 Accredited business, Sewell Construction is able to utilise digital technologies and deliver schemes from small extensions to large developments at the highest quality, so we were able to demonstrate this through the virtual reality tour.

“We also provided an overview of the diverse Sewell Group, which highlighted the various areas of our business and it was great to be a part of this innovative event.”

Skills Humber was sponsored by the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Hull City Council, North Lincolnshire Council, North East Lincolnshire Council and Green Port Hull.
