Inspiring careers in construction

We’ve had a blast so far in October with a number of engagement events, all with the aim of inspiring careers in the construction industry. Over the course of a week, the team joined young people across the region to help them with their career aspirations and give them an insight into the different opportunities available within construction.

Team members, Matt and Oliver, joined a whole host of businesses from across Yorkshire and the Humber at the Tech Expo Humber, to showcase the digital aspect of the construction world. They highlighted the career paths that are available, whilst also giving visitors the chance to experience a virtual reality programme created for the Ron Dearing UTC development in 2016, for a hands-on experience. The event saw over 2000 attendees and 40% of these were students.

As well as this, Katie from our design team was inspiring careers for girls in the classroom at Craven Primary Academy in Hull. As a woman in construction, Katie held a workshop with a group of year 5 female pupils, aiming to help with their career aspirations of working in the industry. The girls were given hands-on experience of working in construction, showing them that there is a much wider choice of a career out there than just working on a building site. They worked in teams using problem-solving, drawing, communication, planning and STEM skills.

To wrap up a fantastic week of engagement, the team took a group of students from Boulevard Academy in Hull, to the UK Construction Week 2019 at the Birmingham NEC, to experience innovation and trade at the UK’s largest built environment event, giving them hands-on access to over 650 construction industry businesses.
