The extension and refurbishment works have seen the creation of five new classrooms, a staff room, cloakrooms and breakout areas, as well as the extension of the existing school hall, creating a larger, flexible space that can be partitioned. The car park and playground area has also been upgraded.
Steve Ratcliffe, Site Manager said;
“I have been truly blown away by the response from all at Sherburn Hungate upon completion of the refurbishment and extension of their school. The team are humbled to have received over 260 thank you cards from the children.
“The past year has meant the team have had to deal with additional complications due to the national pandemic, on top of the usual challenges of carrying out construction work in a live school environment, but we have worked together with the school to overcome these.
“Although we are always conscious of minimising disruption wherever we can, there were some instances that meant the school had to adapt to building system checks, the lack of car parking, reduced playground, field and hall access whilst works were underway.
“It is because of this relationship we have built with the school from the very start that meant this ran smoothly from start to finish.
“The whole school have fully embraced and welcomed the team working on site, and I know I can speak on behalf of the entire team when I say we will miss working at Sherburn Hungate.”
To give a little something back to the children of the school, Sewell Construction, along with subcontractors Ashford Cladding, D&D Decorators and CJ Connally, donated £550 worth of Amazon Vouchers so that the children can line the bookshelves in their new library space.
Fiona Mackay, Deputy Headteacher at Sherburn Hungate Primary School said;
“I want to say a huge thank you from all of us here at Sherburn Hungate Primary School, to Sewell Construction and their subcontractors, for the Amazon vouchers that have been gifted to us. It is going to be a great luxury picking some wonderful new books for the new library space named ‘Author’s Corner’ by Site Manager Steve himself.
“The Sewell Construction team have really embraced how we are and what we pride ourselves on as a school throughout the entire process. They have been polite, kind and genuine to our staff and children, always going that extra mile.
“The project team visited one of our Reception classes for a Q&A session which then inspired an assembly about the builders called ‘Famous in our Field’, where we celebrated the hard work and brilliance of the building team.
“Whilst the team have done their jobs on completing their contract, it is important to note the impact and legacy that they leave behind; they have really inspired hearts and minds.”
