Work begins on flagship Hull primary school

Work is underway to build a new primary school in Hull following a surge in demand for places.

Broadacre Primary School in Wawne Road will increase capacity by 210 pupil places, creating a 630-place school, following the rise and expansion of local housing.

The £8.2 million project will also include one of Hull’s first purpose-built bases for young children with Autistic Spectrum Condition consisting of 10 places, a 52-place nursery, enhanced external spaces and teaching areas, and a fenced multi-use games area.

The project is being delivered by Hull Esteem Consortium LEP Ltd, the council’s pre-procured framework which has led the delivery of £400 million of new and improved education facilities across the city, along with culture and leisure regeneration projects, including Hull New Theatre and Ferens Art Gallery.

Sewell Construction has been appointed to build the new school. The team will create a new car park and dig deep drainage over the first seven weeks, before moving onto the building footprint and laying the foundations up to March. The steel structure of the new building will then be erected.

Martin Standley, Project Manager at Sewell Construction, said: “It’s very exciting to start work on this project and it follows a full year of hard work in the planning. It is wonderful to see it coming off the drawing board.

“The school is the foundation for children’s futures and it’s far more than just a building, as it will make a great difference to staff and pupils for generations to come.

“There will be some great opportunities for children to safely engage with the build process in the months ahead and combine some of that with their curriculum.

“The existing school will remain operational throughout and we won’t need to carry out piling work, which will reduce noise for staff and pupils.”

The school is part of the Humber Education Trust and the new building will be open to staff and pupils in February 2022.

The existing school, located adjacent to the site of the new building, will then be demolished and new school playing fields will be open once the pitches are established.

Councillor Peter Clark, Portfolio Holder for learning, skills and safeguarding children, said: “It’s great to see work begin on this new build school. I know the local community will eagerly watch progress as the school is built.

“It will provide an additional 210 places, along with Special Education Needs (SEN) provision and a nursery, which will help provide the extra pupil places needed in the North Carr area of the city.”
